Kia Sorento EGR delete

Engine management light, a flat spot pulling away, then limp mode with the caravan on the back. On a 2.2 CRDi Sorento that is usually the EGR. Mobile software delete at your location, £220.

How the EGR fails on a Sorento

The valve sticks first. Every diesel Sorento relies on the intake running hot enough to keep soot off the EGR valve. A Sorento that does the school run, sits at the yard and tows on a Saturday never gets there. Carbon builds on the valve seat, the valve hangs part-open or refuses to open at all, the ECU sees a flow figure it cannot reconcile and stores P0401 or P0402. A lumpy idle and hesitation off the line come before the light. On the D4HA 2.0 and the older 2.5 the fault stops there, and it comes back after every clean.

The cooler goes second. On the D4HB 2.2 fitted from the XM onward, the EGR cooler is a water-cooled heat exchanger in the exhaust gas path, and cooler leaks are well-documented alongside the valve fault with age and mileage. The signs: coolant level dropping with no puddle underneath, white or grey smoke on a cold start, the same P0400-series codes, and on a car topped up and ignored for long enough, limp mode with a trailer behind.

Sorento engines covered

Sorento BL 2.5 CRDi and 2.2 CRDi, 2002 to 2009

The first Sorento ran a 2.5 CRDi, with a 2.2 CRDi D4EB in later cars. Valve sticking with carbon on both. No cooler fault of note.

Sorento XM 2.2 CRDi and 2.0 CRDi, 2010 to 2014

The D4HB 2.2 and the D4HA 2.0. The 2.2 is the one with the cooler to watch as well as the valve; the 2.0 is a valve fault. Both covered.

Sorento UM 2.2 CRDi, 2015 to 2020

D4HB only. It is the same engine Hyundai fitted to the Santa Fe in the same years, and it fails the same way in both.

Sorento MQ4 2.2 Smartstream, 2020 onward

Kia's newer 2.2 with a short fault record so far.

Other Kia diesels are on the Kia EGR delete hub. A variant not listed here, call 0161 694 7331 and we will check.

What the delete does to that fault

It answers both failures above. The ECU stops commanding the EGR valve, so a valve stuck with carbon can no longer produce the flow error that puts the Sorento into limp mode, and there is nothing left to log a P0401 or P0402 against. The EGR circuit is closed in software, so exhaust gas stops passing through the cooler on a D4HB, and a cooler that has been weeping coolant into the intake is no longer fed. The valve, the cooler and the pipework stay on the engine and stop being used. Codes cleared on the day, and the remap is permanent.

Is it definitely the EGR?

Three things help us confirm it before we set off. The exact codes from a code reader. Whether the coolant level is dropping with no visible leak. The smoke: what colour, and whether it is only on a cold start. If coolant has been entering the engine for months, the delete stops further ingress but does not undo damage already done, and we will say so on the day rather than remap a car that needs something else first. If a DPF light is on as well, both are handled in the same visit for £445: see DPF and EGR delete.

Questions Sorento owners ask

Is it definitely the EGR, or could it be something else on a Sorento?
A P0400-series code can also come from a split vacuum hose or a fouled intake throttle, and coolant loss on a Sorento can be a heater matrix or the thermostat housing. We read the codes and the live data before we write anything. If it is not the EGR, we tell you.
My Sorento has been losing coolant. Will the delete stop it?
If the loss is through the EGR cooler, yes. With the circuit closed in software, exhaust gas no longer passes through the cooler and the route into the intake is shut. It does not repair damage already done by coolant that has been burning in the cylinders for months. We check before we remap and tell you what we find.
Does the delete cover the EGR cooler on the Sorento as well as the valve?
Yes. With the EGR circuit disabled, the cooler no longer carries exhaust gas, so a cracked cooler stops mattering and a sound one stops being worked. It stays in place with the valve and pipework. Nothing is removed and nothing needs replacing.
Will the fault codes come back on the Sorento after the delete?
No. The EGR codes are cleared on the day, and the ECU is no longer monitoring a system it has stopped commanding, so there is nothing to log. Codes from unrelated systems are untouched. Anything that reappears would be a different fault, and we would say so.
