Should you replace your EGR valve or delete it?
Your EGR warning light is on. You've had it diagnosed, and the valve is the culprit. Now you're faced with a choice: pay for a replacement and hope it holds, or have the valve deleted from the ECU entirely.
Both options have their place. Here's an honest breakdown of each so you can make the right call for your vehicle and how you use it.
EGR valve replacement
Replacement means fitting a new valve, either an OEM part or a quality aftermarket equivalent, and getting the car back to manufacturer specification.
Pros
- The vehicle remains road-legal for emissions
- Maintains manufacturer spec and won't affect an on-road MOT
- The right choice if the vehicle is under warranty or you need it to pass a standard emissions test
Cons
- Costs typically range from £300 to £700 or more, depending on the vehicle and labour rates
- Requires a garage visit and time off the road
- EGR valves are prone to clogging with carbon deposits over time, a new valve on a high-mileage diesel will often fail again within a few years
If your vehicle is newer, still under manufacturer or dealer warranty, or you need to maintain road-legal emissions status, replacement is the correct route. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
EGR delete
An EGR delete removes the valve from the ECU via remap. The engine management system is reprogrammed so it no longer references the EGR circuit, eliminating fault codes and preventing any further EGR-related issues.
Pros
- Permanent fix, no repeat faults, no carbon build-up, no return visits
- Cheaper than replacement at £220
- We come to you, the job takes around an hour and there's no need to take the vehicle to a garage
- Over 7,000 vehicles worked on across Greater Manchester
Cons
- EGR delete is for off-road and track use only. It must be declared as a vehicle modification and the vehicle will not pass an MOT emissions check while used on public roads. This is a legal requirement, not a small print footnote, please factor it in before going ahead.
Which option is right for you?
Here's a simple framework.
EGR replacement makes more sense if:
- The vehicle is still under warranty
- It's a newer, lower-mileage car
- You need it fully road-legal and MOT-ready without any modification declarations
- You have a lease or finance agreement with condition requirements at return
EGR delete makes more sense if:
- The vehicle is high mileage and has had EGR problems before
- It's used primarily off-road, on a farm, on a private estate, or as a track vehicle
- You want a permanent solution without repeat repair bills
- You're prepared to declare the modification and use it accordingly
